The Red Queen is a version of a specially designed weapon used by the Order of the Sword created by their chief scientist Agnus. It is unique in its motorcycle type accelerator handle which can be used to rev it up to release a flaming propellant along the blade with a powerful strike. However, it is later shown that Credo too, has a handle similar to Nero's but no evidence to show it is used for the same purpose.
The Red Queen itself is specially modified by Nero allowing it to be revved-up three times and this entire build up of exhaust can be released all at once for a single powerful blow or with separate strikes. This and several other modifications makes the Red Queen nearly impossible for anyone but Nero wield. Judging by the shape of its blade, the Red Queen is more than likely modeled after the German Grosses Messer (lit. "big knife").

Sparda was once one of Mundus' Devil Knights, and apparently took part in the invasion of the human world. At some point however, he suffered a change of heart and switched sides, fighting to protect the humans. He defeated Mundus' demon armies, before moving onto the Prince Of Darkness himself. Sparda defeated Mundus, and sent him and his armies back to the demon realm. In order to close the gateway, Sparda used his own blood, along with the blood of a human priestess, in conjunction with his sword and a mystical amulet. Pouring his demonic energy into the sword allowed him to close the door between realms, however this also robbed him of the lion's share of his abilities. Sparda could still access his powers when he used the amulet but only for a brief time. Sparda's activities over the next two thousand years are shrouded in legend, however it is understood that for a time, directly after defeating Mundus, he ruled over the humans before eventually vanishing. Devil May Cry 4 raises an interesting plot element, as it would seem that Sparda sacrificed his powers only to seal off the full functions of the Temen-ni-gru, as according to the Order of the Sword and by Dante's admission, Sparda sealed the true hell gate by using Yamato. He showed up again in the twentieth century where he met and fell in love with a human woman named Eva. He fathered the twins and for a brief time lived with his family, before he again disappeared. However, Vergil immediately kills Beowulf and he falls apart, realizing his mistake. Vergil then takes Beowulf's soul as a Devil Arm. Dante later obtains it after Arkham activates the Temen-ni-gru and Vergil falls into an abyss.

Rebellion once belonged to Dante's father, the Dark Knight Sparda, and was given to Dante as a keepsake. Dante uses it as his primary weapon in all appearances, barring the first Devil May Cry and his cameo appearance in Viewtiful Joe. Dante usually carries the sword on his back, but in The Animated Series, he carries it in a guitar case, so as not to attract unwanted attention.
At the end of Dante's first battle with Vergil in Devil May Cry 3, Vergil impales Dante with the Rebellion, inadvertently awakening Dante's Devil side and granting him access to Devil Trigger. At this point, the sword also awakens, opening up the crossguard and skull design around the hilt.

The Yamato once belonged to Vergil's father, Sparda, and according to the Order of the Sword, it was used to seal the "true Hell Gate". It was eventually given to Vergil as a memento, and he uses it as his primary weapon in Devil May Cry 3. It was somehow found, broken, by the Order of the Sword, and their act of taking it is what drives Dante to retrieve it by entering Fortuna in Devil May Cry 4. It is kept in Agnus's Containment Room within Fortuna Castle, but is restored and taken by Nero when his dormant powers as an heir to Sparda emerge. Thereafter, Nero is able to use the sword while in Devil Trigger. However, it is taken back from him by Sanctus when he is absorbed into the Savior, and is then used by Agnus to reopen the Hell Gate. After slaying Agnus, Dante retrieves the Yamato from the gate, which he destroys with it. Thereafter, he wields it while his Dark Slayer Style.
